Read the stories behind the dogs on the Freedom Flight shirt design.
This shirt isn’t just a design.
It’s a snapshot of a moment in history — a moment when the Humane Society of St. Thomas was pushed past its limits, and a community came together in a way that still brings tears to my eyes.
In early 2024, our shelter was holding over 350 animals, even though it was built for less than 100. Dogs were in crates, hallways, offices — anywhere we could safely place a soul who needed us. The staff was exhausted. Volunteers were stretched thin. Every day felt like we were trying to hold back the ocean with our bare hands… but we never stopped trying.
Then came the day we heard the words no shelter ever wants to hear — we had no choice but to clear the shelter.
So we did the only thing we could: We went to social media and begged the world to help us.
And the world answered.
Rescue Shelters from the states stepped up. Adopters stepped up. People donated, shared, prayed, and rallied. In just a few weeks, thousands of dollars were raised. And on one unforgettable day in February 2024, something miraculous happened:
Every single dog. Every single cat. Even eight bunnies.
All of them were loaded into cars, trucks, flatbeds, and taken to the airport. Two private planes were donated. And every one of those 350+ souls left the island for safety. I still get chills thinking about it.
And that’s the moment captured on the shirt — the little plane flying off with the dogs that made this rescue mission so unforgettable.
🐾 Mr. Wiggles (later named Foster) – The dog flying the plane
Foster came to us in heartbreaking condition. Covered in fleas, paws burnt so badly he couldn’t walk, blisters that made every step painful.
A volunteer cared for him daily, massaging his paws with coconut oil to ease the pain. He would cry when she left — not because he was hurt, but because he trusted her.
When a plea went out for a foster, a woman stepped up. She renamed him Foster to remind herself not to fall in love… but of course she did.
And to this day, Foster still lives happily on St. Thomas, loved beyond measure and totally in love with his new mom!
🐾 Ewe – The dog in the 2nd seat of the Plane
Ewe came in through the agriculture department, accused of harming sheep — which is how she got her name. But anyone who spent five minutes with her knew the truth: she was a gentle, goofy love bug.
She adored toys, park time, and snuggles.
Her body told a different story though — scars suggesting a past that may have included dog fighting. And yet, she carried no anger in her heart.
Dogs forgive more freely than humans ever could.
We don’t deserve them.
Thank you to Lake Norman Humane Society for taking Ewe in the big transport. She was adopted a few months after she arrived.
🐾 Star – The pocket-sized pittie with the big personality
Star was the little dog with the huge attitude — a pocket pittie who made sure everyone knew exactly how she felt about them. She picked her people carefully, and if she didn’t choose you… well, she made that clear too.
But to the volunteers, she was a favorite.
She was the dog whose name we whispered in meetings, the one we advocated for again and again when decisions became difficult. In an overcrowded shelter, behavior issues can sometimes determine a dog’s fate — not because anyone wants it that way, but because safety has to come first.
But Star had fans.
Volunteers begged for more time, more chances, more networking. They knew there had to be someone out there — a family meant for her, a person who would understand her quirks and love her anyway.
And they were right.
On the February 2024 rescue flight, Star got her miracle. She flew to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, walked off the plane, and almost immediately found her forever family. They adopted her so quickly, embraced her so fully, and treated her exactly as she always believed she deserved: like the queen she is.
🐾 Goldie – The dog who taught me how big love can be
And then there’s Goldie — the last dog on the plane, hanging off the wing in the design.
Goldie was my very first shelter love.
When I started volunteering at the Humane Society of St. Thomas, I spent a year doing laundry before I ever walked a single dog. And when the time came to walk the big pitties, I won’t lie — I was intimidated. Their heads were huge, their muscles impressive, and I wasn’t sure I belonged in that space.
But Goldie changed everything.
She showed me that the love pitties give is bigger than their bodies, bigger than their past, and bigger than the fears we walk in with.
I swear to this day that I taught Goldie how to say “I love you.”
You couldn’t convince me otherwise.
Goldie left the island in 2022 and traveled to our rescue partner, Pet Search in Pittsburgh. And even now, I still get to see her through photos and Facebook updates — happy, safe, adored. My heart will love Goldie forever.
🐾 Cash – The runner behind the plane
Cash had originally been adopted by a tourist visiting from Wisconsin. But just days before he was meant to fly home, we learned his state wouldn’t allow heartworm-positive dogs.
It took eight months — eight long months of treatment, donations, vet visits, and the kind of love that only a foster mom can give. She cried the day he finally left, even though she wanted him to have the life he deserved.
And when he landed in Wisconsin, his new dad was waiting.
Cash finally got the ending he deserved.
🐾 And none of this would have happened without Pets With Wings
Every miracle on that shirt, every animal on that plane, every second chance — all of it was made possible by Pets With Wings.
This incredible organization works tirelessly to build relationships with stateside rescues, adopters, and transport partners. They take dogs that the island cannot fully support and bring them to places where animals have more opportunities:
✨ Places with dog parks
✨ Dog-friendly restaurants
✨ Big pet stores where a dog can wander the aisles and pick out their own toy
✨ Communities where pets are treated like family
So many of the dogs who leave our shelter began life as yard dogs, bait dogs, neglected dogs, or survivors of dog fighting. Through the love of staff and volunteers, they are rehabilitated. Through the compassion of Pets With Wings, they are flown to the mainland — where they finally get:
🐾 A home
🐾 A family
🐾 A warm car ride looking at Christmas lights
🐾 A Starbucks pup cup
🐾 A chance to wear silly sweaters
🐾 A spot on a couch
🐾 A life worth living
It’s more than transport. It’s transformation.
Thank you, Pets With Wings, for giving every one of these animals a chance not just to survive… but to truly live.
Would you consider having a travel companion?
No cost to you unless you want to pay for this companion. They are always looking for guests to escort our fur babies, cats, kittens, puppies, or small dogs back to the mainland.
NO, you aren’t adopting or keeping it, just allowing it to catch a ride with you on the plane.
How it works
A Pets with Wings Team Member will meet you at the airport with a carry on bag, upon your arrival at your destination one of our partner rescues will meet you in baggage claim and take the pet from you. You are simply the transportation the pet needs to get to one of our rescues and have a second chance at life.
If this is something you might consider, please reach out to petswwings@gmail.com.
